In this article, the author argues that while autonomous vehicles are being promoted in the name of road safety, it is close to impossible to get enough road data from autonomous vehicles to statistically snow that autonomous vehicles are safer than human-operated vehicles. Given that it is infeasible to drive autonomous vehicles enough miles to get enough data to prove their safety, autonomous vehicle makers will need to develop other methods to demonstrate safety and reliability.
