This article describes the threat of geographic deepfakes. Most people think of deepfakes as hyper-realistic fake videos of people saying or doing things that they never actually did. Often overlooked are geographic deepfakes—that is, AI-generated fake satellite imagery. Throughout history, fake maps have been used to give credence to mythological geographies or to distribute to enemies during wartime to shake their morale. The article describes the threat that geographic deepfakes pose today and how the most important step to counter their impact is to raise awareness about their existence.
