Feds defend voluntary robot car regulations

This article describes the arguments for and against robot car regulations. While safety advocates argue for strict autonomous vehicle regulations, the Trump administration formed a voluntary reporting system, arguing that they do not have a mechanism to force auto makers to submit safety assessments before putting self-driving cars on the road, and that public opinion should be enough to incentivize autonomous vehicle makers to adhere to safety standards. The Trump administration argued that having voluntary safety standards is the best way to prioritize safety while also enabling innovation.
