In this article, Miya Tokumitsu argues that the modern workplace pressures workers to "love to grind," a trend which is both counterproductive and dangerous. Over the past several decades, "passion" became a prerequisite for entering certain work cultures. The resulting glorification of overwork has spread across industries. Yet, overwork adds a negligible amount of economic output. It is rationalized on an ideological basis, not an economic one. This ideology has become so internalized that workers feel like they have to adopt the so-called love of the grind.
