This article describes how amidst the Black Lives Matter/anti-police brutality protests of spring 2020, memes were used as a tool for activism. Activists flooded the #BlueLivesMatter hash tag with pictures of blue Pokemon, and sent K-pop “fan cam” videos to the Dallas Police Department as a response to a call for video footage of illegal activity from the protests. Activists who were not able to attend in-person protests due to the COVID-19 pandemic appreciated having an online way to promote their cause.
