In this article, Gabriella Coleman reflects on the importance of anonymity and how it is almost impossible on the Internet today. She commends the group Anonymous for using their anonymity for activism without putting the focus on their own identities and glory. Coleman considers a few lessons surrounding anonymity online: transparency is not a panacea for misinformation, the shield of anonymity, and ego containment and the harms of unbridled celebrity.
