In this book, the authors explore what work is and why it is significant for us as people. They begin by exploring the cultural malaise surrounding our work, and its relation to anxieties such as unemployment and meaninglessness at work. Then, they build up a model of the relation of our selves to the work we do. Finally, they begin to suggest ways of fixing our work system, starting from bottom-up accounts of workplace experiences rather than starting from abstract theory.
