One Month, 500,000 Face Scans: How China Is Using A.I. to Profile a Minority

This article describes how China is using facial recognition technology to track the Uighurs, a minority ethnic group in China. This overt racism is in stark contrast to the facial recognition algorithms deployed in the western world that have racism unintentionally baked into the algorithms but do not have a racist intention. The developers of this Chinese facial recognition technology have ambitions to deploy their algorithms overseas—an urgent threat to western democracies.
